Turning a Shed Into a Tiny Home? Questions to Consider

If you want a tiny home, you can build it from scratch. However, if you want to save a bit of time, you may want to start with a shed and turn that into a tiny home. This is a great way to create a little home for you, a guest house for your yard or a tiny home for any other reason. However, you have to choose your shed carefully. Here's what to keep in mind.

1. Is the shed finished?

In some cases, if the shed is finished, that may work perfectly for you. You can simply paint the walls, add a few furnishings and bring power from your house with an extension cord. However, in other cases, you may want to put in built-in structures, add wiring and insulation, and put in windows and doors. As a result, a partially finished shed may be better for you -- these have the studs showing on the inside, and in some cases, the outside may need siding or painting as well.

2. Does the shed have quality windows?

Buying a shed with windows already built into it can make your tiny home project cheaper and easier. However, you have to keep in mind that the windows for a shed may not provide the qualities you want when you are living in a space. As a result, check out the windows and doors to ensure they are high quality. If not, you'll need to buy replacements or find a different shed without the windows and add them. Make sure there's ample room for windows on any shed so you can experience natural light, which will make the tiny house seem more spacious.

3. Can the shed be mounted onto a trailer?

If you want a mobile tiny home, you will need to find ways to add wheels to your shed. That can typically be accomplished by placing your shed on a trailer. However, if your shed is too large, that won't be possible. Look into a small shed or consider a custom built shed built directly onto a trailer.

4. Does the shed have cool features you like?

The world of sheds is huge, and it includes everything from small garden sheds to large rural sheds for farm machinery and the like. If you plan to turn your shed into a little home, look for features that are appealing to you. For example, some sheds have porches. Other sheds have large roof overhangs under which you could build a patio or a deck. Still other sheds have garage doors that you could open if you want to have a space with a huge view of the outside.

About Me

Converting our carport

We don't use the carport, and we have a very limited living space, so we think it might be time to convert some of that space into a playroom. My husband already did this on our last house, and it's a really good way to keep all of the toys contained in one area and stop me having to constantly pick up small pieces of toys before I trip on them! It's a total sanity saver. This time we are taking step by step photos and descriptions so that you can get your contractor to do exactly the same at your house.
